Reliable sealing of the agitator is a critical issue. Oil leakage caused by agitator shaft sealing not only wastes a large amount of oil but also contaminates the drilling fluid. Rotating shaft seals are divided into mechanical seals and packing seals. The shaft of a drilling fluid agitator operates at low speed and low pressure, so packing seals are more suitable because of their simple structure, easy maintenance, and high reliability. The packing seal is an early form of rotating shaft seal and is still occasionally used in agitators due to its simplicity. The principle of packing sealing is to use the pressure from the gland to compress the packing material in the stuffing box, thereby generating radial pressure on the surface of the agitator shaft. Because the packing contains lubricant, a fluid film forms on the shaft surface. This film lubricates the shaft while also preventing the lubricating oil inside the equipment from leaking out.
